My Daily Pick for Santa Anita

My choice for the nightcap at Santa Anita today is Whiskey Talks. She is making her debut for trainer Jeff Mullins, who has won with seven of his first-time starters at the meet. Good luck everybody!

What I Think About LUCK

Okay, we are three episodes into LUCK, and I think it’s a well done show. There are several storylines taking place at the track, and each one makes you wonder what will happen next. Dustin Hoffman isĀ Ace, who is out for revenge after going to jail protecting people three years earlier. He is a gambling operator, and he is out to build a casino with his right-hand man, Gus, helping him out. Turo (John Ortiz) is an arrogant trainer who loses a horse he is keen on, but then gets it back after a group of degenerate gamblers win a $2 million pick six and buy the horse. Then you have Walter Smith, an elderly trainer who has a horse loaded with potential. Smith seems to have a hidden past. Two jockeys, one an apprentice, the other a veteran, deal with everyday ups and downs in their job, and they both deal with a nervous agent.

It’s a good sign that HBO picked up the show for a second season already. In fact, this was done after the pilot premiered. I hope it stays on the air for a long time. It is a good show, and is only going to get more interesting.

This is a classic match of East vs. West. In 1938, Seabiscuit was the most popular horse in the West, taking on all comers and winning. On the East side, War Admiral had quite a year himself, winning the Triple Crown. These two had a showdown at Pimlico Race Course, home of the Preakness Stakes, on November 1, 1938. America was mesmerized, with support for both equines evident. Look at the crowd on that day.

To kick off this page, here is a video of the inaugural Santa Anita Handicap, which took place in 1935. Take a look at the size of the crowd, too. I take no credit for this video.

Welcome to my page devoted to horse racing

Good morning everybody.

I have created this page with the intention of celebrating the sport of horse racing. I will post links to articles and videos, give my opinions about aspects of the sport, and for you horseplayers out there, I will give a pick of who I think will win one race each racing day. I follow the Southern California racing scene, watching action at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, Del Mar, and the Fairplex. This sport is a part of me, and I want to share how fun and exciting it is with you. Enjoy my page. And feel free to follow me and message me.
